The RMAF-AIROD was officially established in 1974 as a unit of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). When it was privatized in January 1985, AIROD commenced operations with 10 Lockheed Managers and 242 Malaysian personnel most of whom were transferred from the RMAF.
Conceived in the early 70's primarily to embark on a “SELF-RELIANCE" posture as a defense strategy to spearhead the development of aerospace industry for Malaysia (depicted by its motto "BERDIKARI")
